Advocacy
Find support for your child’s well-being
Supporting students’ social-emotional and behavioral health is a priority across all our schools. Every school has access to dedicated professionals - including counselors, psychologists, and social workers who are here to help. If you have concerns about your child or want to learn more about the support available, reach out to your child’s school counselor. Since 2020, we’ve expanded our team to better meet students’ needs.
School safety and security update

Explore workshops offered for parents of young children
Project Enlightenment offers in-person and virtual training sessions throughout the year for parents of young children. Most workshops are free of charge. Our knowledgeable staff take the mystery out of topics such as discipline, self-control, developmentally appropriate practices, and more. The first parent course is Sept. 8.
New cellphone policy supports student focus and well-being
Student personal devices must be silenced and put away during instructional time. Starting this school year, a new districtwide policy is in effect: all student personal devices—including cellphones and smartwatches—must be silenced and stored away during instructional time. Note that there is an exception for high school students, with teacher approval. Families can find more information and a full policy overview at wcpss.net/cellphones.
National increase in vaccine-preventable diseases
Cases of vaccine-preventable diseases like whooping cough (pertussis) and measles (rubeola) are rising nationally. Whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory illness, is being reported both nationally and locally, with symptoms that can persist for weeks or months. Although no measles cases have been reported in North Carolina as of late March 2025, public health officials are urging vigilance due to the virus’s extreme contagiousness. Both diseases are preventable through vaccination, with North Carolina’s vaccination rates for kindergartners exceeding 93% for the 2023–24 school year.

Supporting Families Amid Recent Federal Immigration Orders
Our primary focus remains on the well-being, safety, and education of every student we serve, regardless of their background. We recognize that recent orders may cause uncertainty for some members of our community. We want to reaffirm our commitment to fostering a safe and welcoming environment where all children can learn and thrive. Read more here.
