The Robotics Club is looking for parent volunteers to run the club for the 2nd/3rd grade group. If you like LEGO, robotics, kids, teaching, or learning and can commit to an hour a week, please reach out to our lead volunteer at LaurelParkFLL@gmail.com as soon as possible.

Unless we get volunteers for this group students in grades 3 and below, will not be able to have that group of students participate in 2025-2026.

What is the Laurel Park Robotics Club?

The Laurel Park Robotics Club is a year-long club that combines LEGO and programing to create and compete robotics missions. The club is open to students in grades 2-5 and is funded by the PTA and coached by parent-led volunteers.

We have two parts to the club: a FIRST LEGO League Challenge team for the 4th and 5th graders, and a FIRST LEGO Explore group for the 2nd and 3rd grade crowd.

What is FIRST LEGO League?

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children in grades 2-5 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping students experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.

This is a fancy way of saying we build cool stuff with LEGO and make it move!

What is the content for the 2nd and 3rd graders?

Focusing more on the foundations of robotics, the kids will build different LEGO structures and vehicles and program them using LEGO’s SPIKE interface and the kits we have at Laurel Park.

When does the club meet?

This will depend on volunteers schedules but historically, we meet weekly from 4-5pm, even during track outs. In 2024-2025, we met every Wednesday and will likely try and keep that day for 2025-2026 unless there is a conflict with the coach's schedule.

What is the Club commitment from 2nd/3rd graders?

Kids do not need to attend over their track out unless they want to! Since we are not prepping for a competition, this is more of a leisurely pace. We also do our best to match kids from the same tracks together on a team so that there is continuity.

Is there a fee for the club?

No! This is a PTA-sponsored club and we are fortunate enough to receive donations from our community that will fully pay for the club related expenses.

Next Steps

If you want your student to participate in this club next, please consider volunteering to run the club meetings. We will provide you with all the tools and training necessary to run the club and will be there to support you. Please contact LaurelParkFLL@gmail.com ASAP so we can discuss further.
